Representation of Age - Newspaper Article

http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/Bristol-s-Claudia-wins-fourth-gold-Commonwealth/story-22051637-detail/story.html

The Newspaper article is about 16 year old Claudia Fragapane who won her 4th gold medal at the common wealth games. Her 4th gold medal means that she is the first English woman to win four common wealth golds in a single game for 84 years.

This creates a positive representation of teenagers because it shows how much she has accomplished at a young age and which not many people in the world can achieve. This is a contrast to the stereo typical representation of teenagers because it shows that she is determined and dedicated as she has achieved winning 4 gold medals.

Representation of Age - Film - Bad neighbors

Film
Bad Neighbors

This film shows the contrast in age with 2 parents and a fraternity.

The young neighbours are represented as only wanting to party and wanting to be superior
e.g. long shots of the house showing the young people partying,
close ups of alcohol showing the stereotype that young people get drunk all the time.

The parents are represented as wanting to fit in with the young people but also are most mature and do not like the neighbors
e.g. mid shot shows them wearing young clothes such as caps and sunglasses,

There is also a scene where the parents talk about not going out

Contrast between the ages
2 mis-shots show the older man loking unhealthy with his shirt off whereas the younger neighbor is shown with a six-pack and well looked after body.
-Shows the stereotype that  younger people want to look good and take pride in their appearance.

Representation of Age - TV show - Sun, Sex and Suspicious parents

Sun, Sex and Suspicious Parents
Series 3 Episode 4
Kos

This episode of sun sex and suspicious parents was filmed on the 8th January 2013 in Magaluf.

The representation of the teenagers filmed in this episode has been created by filming them whilst on their first holiday without their parents.

The program has been mediated by teenagers join on their holiday not knowing  there parents or 2 family members are also there watching them each day.
Selection has been used to show the most extravagant parts of their holiday to make the viewing more entertaining and to get more people to watch it as in this particular episode there was 965,000 viewers. They also need to select the best parts of the parents commentary to go with the teenagers night out.

Lighting
When the program starts the lighting is bright. This is when they are filming with the parents because hey are unknown to what their children are actually doing on night out.

When the teen agers get on their holiday on nigh out and when their parents are reviewing the filming of them the lighting changes to low key lighting because its filmed at night time and because it is shocking for the parents to be watching.

Negative representation
It crates a negative image of teenagers and specifically teenagers abroad because it shows them getting excessively drunk every nigh and going against what their parents have told them not to do. Its a stereo typical representation of teenagers on their first holiday and what people would expect to happen.
It also shows teenagers being reliant on their parents as in this episode charli was brought food by her mum and her mum saying that she does most ting for her daughter she cant do anything on her own. it also shows her mum making her bed, helping her pack bring her tea and fussing about her daughter.

Look magazine-double page spread analysis

Look magazine-double page spread analysis

Double page spreads in LOOK magazines are similar as they have the person on the front cover on their double age spread. Half of the page is taken up by a large image which shows who the article is about. They use a large font size to show the celebrities name then a smaller one for the sub heading to tell the reader what the article is based around. The first letter of the article is larger than the rest of the text. There are two equal columns that the text is displayed in.

Textual analysis
Researching textual analysis of current magazines helped with my pre-production as it showed different features that are included on a magazine cover. I researched textual analysis of VOGUE and LOOK magazine which showed me the main features on their magazine covers and what I should include on mine to make it look of a similar style.

The masthead is the visual branding of the title and is often done on a specially designed type face. Knowing this made me think about how I wanted the magazine to be perceived and similar magazines that I wanted it to look like.

The central image can be what draws people into buying a magazine so it has to stand out and be relevant to the target audience. By looking at current fashion magazines with a similar target audience it helped with my pre-production by showing me what type of images they have used and what type of clothing and facial expressions were used on their chosen model. To take my photography for my covers knowing what type of images were already on magazines and how the person on the cover had been positioned and clothed helped by showing me what is relevant and attracts their target audience.

The purpose of cover lines is to entice the reader into picking up and/or buying the magazine. Generally there's one main larger cover line and then a few (or lots of) smaller ones. By researching magazine cover lines it showed how they link to the magazines target audience because some topics mentioned would not apply to certain ages or genders.

Surveys
The survey I did helped me with my pre-production as it showed me what people were looking for and what they liked when buying a magazine. All of my magazine survey responses were from women which helped me because they are the target audience of my magazine covers. The survey showed me that the articles people want to see in a magazine is celebrity interviews, fashion tips and celebrity gossip this helps me to decide on the type of covers story’s to place on my magazine front covers. It also showed me that the responders though that the main image on a covers is the most important. This showed me that the images I am taking for my own front covers need to stand out as they would on a normal magazine. Pink was also chosen as the colour that most draws people in to reading and buying a magazine showing me that it should be included. It also helped me to choose a reasonable price that readers would not find too expensive. The questionnaire results showed that people were willing to spend anything between £1- £4 for a magazine.

Target audience

The target audience for my magazine is women aged 25-45 because that is the target audience for the magazines I am basing mine on which are LOOK and VOGUE. The cover stories will be based around women’s fashion and beauty which is why it will be targeted at women. I am also aiming my magazine at the socio economic groups A (Higher managerial, administrative, professional), B (Intermediate managerial, administrative, professional) and C1 (Supervisory, clerical, junior managerial).

Course work-Magazine textual analysis

Look Magazine

Masthead
The masthead 'LOOK' is partly covered but  it shows that this is a very popular magazine because people will still know what it is even with the whole heading not being shown. It stands out because it is in a large bold font which has been consistently used by look. It also takes up 1/3 of the magazine cover which makes it hard to miss and one of the main focus points. The colour of the masthead is pink. Pink is seen as a feminism colour so it would mainly attract women as the target audience.

Slogan/Tag line
'How to respin your job into the career you really want'. This makes the claim that by buying this magazine and reading the article you will be in a career that makes you happy and that you actually want. This will attract students that are looking to get a job and women that are unhappy with their current working situation. It houses the word 'you' which makes the reader feel as though they are being targeted and that this magazine will know what career they really want to be in.

Central image
The central image is the clear main focus of the magazine as it has been centrally placed and everything else on the cover is surrounding it. The image is of a very well known woman Kim kardashion which makes the audience have an interest in her and intrigued to read abut her.  Kim Kardashion has been chosen as the main image on the front cover because she is international known and appeals to men and women of all ages. She is giving direct eye contact which draws the audience in to buy it. Her clothing is not inappropriate or revealing as she is wearing a high neck jumper which make it appeal make to people of a younger age.

Discourse & Cover lines
The discourse & cover lines focus new fashion icons, bargains and trends for women. One cover story includes how to 'think like a man' which further implies that this magazine if being advertised for women. One of the cover lines 'new year new bags' makes the reader feel as though they need to buy a new bag because this is implying that there are new fashion trends amongst bags and they should be in them not last year.Over all all of the cover lines appeal to the audience as they are written about fashion, beauty and celebrity's that will make the audience want to read the magazine.

Mode of address
The way the magazine addresses the reader is chatty and welcoming as though they already know what you like and what you want to buy.It uses the word 'you' which makes you feel like they are talking to. Also the cover line 'trends you'll adore' is an informal and  friendly was for the magazine to talk to the reader.

House style
This makes each LOOK magazine recognisable. The font style of the masthead and cover lines have stayed the same through every issue creating a general look of the magazine. This particular magazine has many titles in pink which stands out against the white backgrounds and is also a feminism colour and one many would associate with women. The reader then becomes familiar with the layout of the magazine and where to find items such as the issue number, date, price, main story, new trends ect.

Vogue

Masthead
The masthead 'VOGUE' is in large capital letters which makes it one of the focus point from the magazine cover. The type face serif font is iconic to the magazine and the audience will recognise it straight away. It is pink which is seen as a feminism colour as vogue's targets women to buy its magazines. The main image covers one letter of the VOGUE title but it is still very visible what magazine this is. That implies that Vogue is a well known magazine because even though the whole heading is not being shown it can still easily be distinguished what magazine it is.

This edition of VOGUE does not have a slogan/tag line. However on other editions of VOGUE the slogan/tag line is a banner across the letter V of the masthead.

She is looking directly into the camera which will appeal to an audience as they will think she is looking just at them.  By putting an image of Lana Del Rey on the front cover people outside the age range of 25-45 which is who the magazine normally targets to may also want to buy the magazine. People that like Land Del Rey as a singer will want to buy the magazine and read the article about her to find out what she's doing.

Discourse & Cover lines
The cover lines on this magazine are quite simple and are placed all around the main image. They are all written in black and pink and are a mixture of serif and sans-serif typefaces. The cover lines will appeal to the audience as they tell them what features inside the magazine and so they will buy it if an article interests them. Each cover line has a large heading and then a smaller subheading underneath. This is so the audience can read it at a quick glance and will look closer to find out more information that is placed underneath. An example of one of the cover lines is 'its time to play dress up with your hair'. This will make people buy the magazine as they may now be conscious about their hair and want to find new ideas of how to change their look to make themselves look good and impress other People.

Mode of address
The way the magazine addresses the reader is informal for example 'more dash then cash'.This would be  because they want the reader to be welcomed by the magazine and so they will be persuaded to buy  it. word such as 'your' and 'yourself' are used on the cover to create a direct between the reader and the magazine.

Magazine analysis

Vogue

Who is interested in this magazine:
Age:25-45
Gender:Women
Socio economic grouping: Group A and B and some C1

Age
The age range for vogue is 25-45 because one story mentions 'cut back alcohol'. This implies that they are not aiming to want young teenagers under the age of 18 to buy thins magazine because they are unable to buy alcohol at this age. Also even at18 when you can legal buy alcohol you would not be initialy thinking about cutting it out of your diet until a few year later suggesting that they are not advertising the magazine to young adults either.

Gender
The gender is women because they may look up to Rihanna and aspects of her life. So they would be interested in copying her style or body and reading this magazine with Rihanna as he main focus will help them get an instie into her life. In addition out of Rihanna's millions of fans a majority of them are women and seeing her on the cover will incise them to buy and read the magazine. Also there is a lot of feature story's on losing weight but still being healthy for example 'eat yours self happy' and how to find clothing that fits your odd type best for example 'fashion to fit every figure'.

Socio economic grouping
People in higher placed jobs in group A,B and some C would be in stressful jobs and the story 'foods to treat depression' may apply to them.

X-factor Mediation process

X-factor Mediation process
Abby & Lisa

Representation
They are ages 17 & 18 so represent teenagers in age. Also as they are only teenager they are not going to be a lawyer or doctors which represent the middle lass they will most likely be representing working class. Both of them are English.

Mediation
Someone probably a producer has made a decision to include this audition in the TV edit because it is an unusual moment that has never happened on any X-Factory audition before. It would also be exciting for viewers to watch as they would want to know the build up to the punch. The camera person has chosen to film the build up to and the actual punch aswell as the judges reaction to it because it will all be interesting for the view to watch.

Sexuality
Geordie shore-Tv show

Geordie Shore is a negative and exaggerated representation sexuality which reflects badly on the northern stereotype. It represents the cast as getting drunk, partying and having sex. This is all shown very clearly to the audience watching which then impacts onto ideologies.

Race
TV show-Hollyoaks

Race is represented negatively on Hollyoaks specifically with Sonny a police officer for Hollyoaks village. sonny is represented as a dodgy police officer as he has murdered and has a lot of secrets that he will go out of his way to keep because as shown in the the image above he is punching someone.People stereo type black people to be involved in a lot of crime and as sonny is black it is furthering this stereo type.
Age
Film- angus thongs and perfect snogging

The film positively represents teenagers as they are not doing anything bad for example.breaking the law. Also the lead character played by Georgia Groome, who showed Georgia's many different sides from a self-obsessed drama queen to a caring and insightful young woman. The changes Gerogia goes though are realistic to many that the modern teenager will go through today and we also see many accurate stereotypes which do not reflect badly on teenagers.

Gender-The big bang theory

Gender
TVshow-The big bang theory

The Big bang theory negatively represents penny (the female lead) because even thought she is seen as part of the guys group she also has been represented as a 'dumb blonde'. This is because of her lack of academic knowledge especial around the guys group.

Sheldon: I need your help in a matter of semiotics.
Penny: What?
Sheldon: Semiotics, the study of signs and symbols as a branch of the philosophy related to linguistics.
Penny: Okay, honey, I know you think you are explaining yourself, but you're really not.

Not everyone was a fan, though. Many viewers were annoyed by the Penny character (Kaley Cuoco), a waitress/actress next door that the show treated as pretty much a trophy to be earned—a pretty, dumb woman who was supposed to be opposite of the smart guys.

Class-Under class

Class-Under class
News paper-Telegraph
Benefit street

Benefits Street moves to Stockton

The new series of the controversial show will take place in Kingston Road in Teesside

This representation this gives of the under class is negative. This is because it stereotypes all long term unemployed people as living of benefits and not wanting to get a job. 'The vast majority of people know that the programme plays to negative stereotypes and I'm certain it won't reflect the amazing sense of community we have here in Stockton.”It will be an unwanted stereotype for people that live off benefits but do want to work or have a reason why they cannot. People living in and around the areas that benefit street is filmed could also think this portrays a negative image of them as 'Local campaigners fear the television programme will see vulnerable residents "exploited", playing to “negative stereotypes” and making the neighbourhood look like a “hellhole”.'
